Adding Speech to MH Clients

I would like to generically add speech to MH clients. I have a couple of PCs that are always on. I also want to plant one in the kitchen. I would think that the web speech option would do this, but it doesn't seem to speak many of the system messages. This might be easy to fix. However, it appears that most users are pushing speech to remote clients with other methods. One method is to have MH send xAP speech messages and use a custom perl script to listen for xAP messages. This script then calls one of three unix speech engines (e.g. festival). This method can be extended to work with windows by modifying the xAP_speech.pl script to send OLE commands to the Microsoft TTS engine. This will work for Windows XP with no additional software and Windows 2000 if the TTS developer kit is installed.
Talking Winamp RF remote control - Has example perl code to call the TTS engine
xAP_speech.pl - Unix only for now

Also consider installing festival for cygwin:
The Festival Speech Synthesis System

PulseAudio - Audio distribution daemon. Might be good for distributing speech.
